Chapter 9 - Ain't no Sacrifice...at all

One of the biggest obstacles most people face in their quest for spiritual growth is a lack of motivation and a reluctance to abandon the world. It may sound odd at first that we could be lacking motivation to get back to "heaven", but many people are disinclined to give up an interesting and thrilling (albeit often painful) world for what they perceive as the boring state of homeostasis in heaven. Indeed, heaven is described in the Course as formless and changeless, and since we're used to the ups and downs of life and the drama attached to them, heaven seems awfully dull.

There are two main aspects to our lack of motivation. The first is the foolish notion that this world is "not that bad". You can address this by having an honest look at your life and the world at large. The second one is realizing what heaven might be like, and experiencing enough of a glimpse of it that you can imagine what it might really be like. At that point, the comparison between the two becomes obvious, and you can start to realize that you're not giving up anything in return for everything. You can then truly strive for heaven, as opposed to just paying lip service to it.

In this chapter, you will first see how hypnotherapy techniques can be used to raise your awareness of the world, and be more honest with yourself in its assessment. You will then learn how deep levels of hypnosis seem to take us into a state that approximates our heavenly state. You will also see how you can use these states to get a sense of what oneness may be like, thereby generating the motivation necessary to be more diligent with respect to putting Course principles into practice.
